Education for all remains a challenge in Rwanda, with a lack of infrastructure, a limited number of qualified teachers and hidden costs that prevent the most vulnerable children from going to school.
Through its groundbreaking education initiatives, Plan International Rwanda promotes improved infrastructure, completion rates and teachers’ English language proficiency. We have established a Teacher Self Learning Academy, which aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Science and English in primary grades by using innovative methods and appropriate technology to improve teaching language, content and methodology.
Success is being seen, with teachers improving their language and methodology as a result of sharing and learning from peers, as well as videos from model teachers that they can access on an iPod. We are regarded as a key voice in the fight for girls’ education, and we support girls and vulnerable groups to attend school with school kits, scholarships, and technical and vocational training schemes.
