Early childhood care benefits the whole community

Plan International Rwanda is committed to ensuring that children receive the best start in life. We support children’s health and development through our comprehensive Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) programme, which incorporates nutrition, de-worming and ECCD practices. See how our ECCD programme benefits children and their communities.

Plan International Rwanda has supported the construction of 28 ECCD centres in 20 communities. All centres are owned and managed by community members. Today, more than 1,500 children are benefitting.

ECCD centres are linked to local health centres to reduce infant mortality through immunisation and reduction in malnutrition.

ECCD centres provide a safe environment for children to play and learn while their parents are at work. Otherwise, children tend to be left at home where they do not have the opportunity and attention to develop to their full potential. Children who attend ECCD centres are also more likely to graduate to and succeed at primary school.
