#LanguageMatters: Using words to promote girls' rights
Language is not neutral. It is both a reflection of our worldview and a tool to reinforce stereotypes and unequal power relations.
That is why Plan International’s UN Office in Geneva has produced a handy guide to help policy-makers develop gender-transformative and age-responsive language. The #LanguageMatters brochure serves as a tool to help anyone writing policy or other types of documents to make sure that the language they use leaves no one behind.
It contains checklists of questions to ask oneself, explanations of why it’s important, and concrete examples of best language for the promotion of girls’ rights (identified thanks to our database!).
