Dr Melanie Swan is our Global Advisor for Early Childhood Development (ECD). In this role she leads Plan International’s global technical network of ECD experts, develops ECD policy and programmatic guidance for Plan International; identifies priorities for knowledge management, research and learning; determines global advocacy priorities; profiles and positions Plan International in key ECD networks, conferences and forums; and supports linkages with other areas of Plan International’s work.
Melanie has a medical and public health background: she graduated as a doctor from London University and worked as a physician - first in the National Health Service and then in the Solomon Islands with DFID - before studying for an MSc (Econ) in Health Policy, Planning and Financing in Developing Countries at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the London School of Economics.
She joined Plan International in 2001 as Brazil’s National Health Advisor, during which time she developed and oversaw a comprehensive ECD programme, before moving in 2006 to become Plan International Latin America’s Regional Health Advisor. In this role she worked with countries to transition from a maternal and child health focus to more comprehensive ECD programming. Her most recent role was as Head of Strategy for the Region of the Americas, where she supported country strategic planning and programme development in 12 countries.
