Mariella Greco was born and raised in Windsor, Canada with her 3 siblings after her parents moved there in the 1950s from an impoverished Italy. She holds both Canadian and Italian/EU citizenships.
Since 1996 she has worked for Plan International in Canada,Egypt, China, Nicaragua, Peru and Paraguay. Mariella is Country Director and Legal Representative for Plan International in Paraguay (since July 2014), and previously held the same post in Peru (2008-2014) and in Nicaragua (2003-2008 - during which time she was decorated with a Medal of Honor by the National Police; and with a Military Medal of Honor by the Armed Forcesfor meritorious service during the Hurricane Felix humanitarian crisis).
Before joining Plan, Mariella worked for 10 years in banking. She put herself through Universityworking as a bank teller and a loans clerk for Canada Trust; and also spent one summer working in the financial heart of London (England) for a financial securities firm. After graduating with herBA she joined the Royal Bank of Canada as a bank manager, operating several retail branches.
She was then accepted into and successfully completed their highly competitive Dealer Trainee Program. Her final position before leaving the bank was as a spot currency trader on the Canada Desk in the global headquarters of the Royal Bank.
In 1990, Mariella also worked for the Canadian Government as a Junior Advisor during the 45th United Nations General Assembly in New York City, supporting Canada’s First Committee and Security Council matters during Canada’s term on the Security Council. She also managed the Canadian Government’s Parliamentary Observer’s Program to the UN.
Mariella holds an Honors Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations from the University of Windsor, and a Master in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, at Tufts University.
