Jonathan Mitchell has over 35 years’ experience in international relief and development, 30 of which he spent with the humanitarian organisation CARE in various roles, most recently providing strategic-level direction, leadership and management as CARE USA’s Chief Operating Officer from August 2011 until June 2014.
His previous positions have included directing regional and country offices in Asia and Africa; leading CARE International's humanitarian emergency function based in Geneva, and heading CARE USA’s organisational development function. He is a Board Member of the Refugee Family Services and was a Board Member and Treasurer for the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership (HAP) between 2007 and 2012.
Mr Mitchell is a UK citizen with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Surrey. He has lived much of his life in Africa, as well as Asia, the USA, the Middle East and Switzerland, and he speaks fluent Indonesian and a smattering of Creole.
Mr Mitchell joined Plan International as Director of International Programmes in September 2014. He leads and manages the Plan International country development and advocacy programmes and disaster risk management and response, as well as the specialist teams responsible for programme quality, policy and global advocacy and research and knowledge management.
