Jo Dempster has over 15 years’ professional experience of working with children and young people through informal education programmes with a particular focus on meaningful participation and governance. Jo has been working at Plan since 2009, firstly out our UK office and then moved to the International Heaquarters. In 2012, Jo developed Plan International's global strategy on Youth Engagement in Plan’s Internal Governance. The strategy goals include establishing Youth Advisory Panels in all of Plan’s Offices (current count is 26) and Youth Observer seats at Plan’s Members Assembly.
Jo joined Plan International UK’s Governance Team in 2009 as their Youth Engagement Officer, here she grew the work of their Youth Advisory Panel including working with the CEO office to reserve seats on Plan UK’s board for Youth Trustees. During her time at Plan International UK Jo also established the Youth Speakers Network in Malawi, Pakistan and Kenya as part of the DfID Governance programme.
Before joining Plan International, Jo managed pioneering youth engagement programmes in the public youth work sector in south London with young people not in education, training or employment. She also founded the charity Global Youth providing support to a small isolated children’s charity on the Thai/ Burmese border.
Jo Dempster is a qualified Youth Worker and has a BA Youth and Community Studies Degree from Greenwich University, UK, where she has also given a series of guest lectures on Global and Intercultural Youth Work.
