Dr Darren Saywell joined Plan International in October 2011 to lead the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programme at Plan International USA. In 2014, his positioned changed to Senior Director – Water, Sanitation and Health as Plan International USA combined its teams into a smaller number of practices. In this capacity, he coordinates and guides large institutional grants on WASH, provides technical leadership and advice for the USA office, develops strategy in support of resource mobilisation, and is involved in wider outreach and advocacy for WASH internationally.
Darren has over 20 years’ experience of international policy, practice, research and advisory work in water supply, sanitation and hygiene, with special interest in the urban environment; and in more than 20 developing countries worldwide.
Previous appointments have spanned a range of institutional backgrounds and management/leadership positions, from academia (Loughborough University, 1994-2000), the United Nations system (WHO, 2000-2005) and professional associations (IWA, 2005-2011).
He was Vice Chair of the Sanitation and Water for All Partnership (SWA) from 2011 to 2014, and he is currently an Editor of the Journal of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Development (appointed 2013) and a member of the External Reference Group working to develop Unicef’s worldwide WASH strategy (appointed 2015).
Dr Saywell is a UK citizen with degrees in Geography and Sanitary Engineering from Oxford and Loughborough Universities respectively. He has worked extensively across Africa, Asia and Latin America and lived most recently in Switzerland and the Netherlands. He is currently resident in the USA.
