Plan International Niger focusses on providing a healthy start for all children.
This is especially important during emergencies. We are currently working in refugee camps in Ayorou and Mangaize where we concentrate on child nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene so that young children are able to remain healthy. even in the most difficult of circumstances.
We have also worked towards providing a healthy start by partnering with local organisations and communities to construct 305 toilets, including in households, public spaces, schools, and in refugee camps. In addition, 5 new boreholes have been completed in the last year, with 6 others renovated, benefitting 1,875 children and helping to mitigate the cholera epidemic in Tillaberi.
Meanwhile, community volunteers and ‘model mothers’ are promoting good nutrition and care practices in camps and communities, including teaching people how to prevent malnutrition. As a result, 465 children have been treated and have remained healthy in the past year. In the refugee camps, meals are distributed twice per day to more than 1,000 children to fight against malnutrition and ensure that whatever the circumstances, they are able to gain a healthy start in life.
