Plan International Niger’s focus around child protection is on universal birth registration and combatting early marriage.
As part of our systematic birth registration work at Tillaberi refugee camp, more than 30,000 children now have birth certificates. The scheme has also been implemented in 70 villages where the percentage of registered children has increased from 45.7% to 57.8%. This achievement was possible because of our powerful partnerships with community leaders whose commitment to raising awareness amongst community members on the importance of birth registration has been pivotal in this success.
We are encouraging communities to reduce harmful practices such as early marriage by partnering with traditional leaders and community members. We have also set up 20 committees which report child abuse and attend training sessions on the dangers of early marriage and promote sexual and reproductive health. Cases of abuse and early marriage are subsequently falling in these communities.
