This year Plan International Ethiopia sponsored Women First 5km race under the theme “Investing in Girls is Investing in the Future”
Mr Manoj Kumar, Country Director, Plan International Ethiopia said that so far, through the Because I am a Girl Campaign we have reached over 3 million girls directly through our programmes across the world and our programmes on gender equality are changing the lives of nearly 27 million girls and boys.
However, a lot need to be done in achieving lasting, positive change in the lives of millions of girls. Thus, Plan International decided that the Because I am a Girl campaign is extended by another year, bringing gender equality and girl's issue to the forefront of our agenda until at least June 2017, he added.
Promoting girls’ issue through sports is one of the most successful approaches that Plan International Ethiopia has been employing through its partner organization namely Great Ethiopian Run (GER), which has been established and directed by the renowned Ethiopian Athlete, Haile Gebressilassie (honored to have 27 world records in his name). Plan International Ethiopia has seized this great opportunities to promote its BIAAG Campaign.
The race is planned for 6 Sunday March, 2016 and around 10,000 participants are expected to take part.
In addition to the mass runners, the event will have diversified categories, including professional athletes, icon women and female ambassador’s competition.
The female ambassador’s and icon women’s category is a competition among prominent and successful women and it is a good opportunity for sharing their experience and inspiring young women and girls.
Registration will start on 8 February 2016.
