Education in Malawi

Improving access to quality education especially for vulnerable and excluded groups of children

Plan Malawi is committed to improving access to and quality of education, particularly for vulnerable and excluded groups of children in the communities where we work. Our skilled staff, trained in gender and child rights, are working to improving retention and completion rates in primary education, with a specific focus on socially-excluded groups such as girls, children with disabilities and children from poor families.

We have a strong partnership with the Malawian government to improve the learning environment, to incorporate effective learning activities, and to strengthen the capacity of families and community organisations to better engage with the government for the provision of a quality education that is learner-friendly, safe and supportive to girls and boys. As part of the programme, we have enabled girls to access Girl Guide Clubs, and so far over 14,000 girls have signed up to attend. The clubs are a space for girls to come together and learn self-esteem and increased confidence to express themselves and set life goals, effecting positive, lasting change in their lives.
