Panamá, 25 April.- Starting today, professional photographers, amateurs and boys and girls can participate in the V Regional Photo Contest and Exhibition “Because I Am a Girl,” organised by Plan International and the EFE news agency.
The theme of the Contest is the empowerment of girls, with photos that represent and transmit their rights
The theme of the Regional Contest is the empowerment of girls and teenagers in Latin America, with photos that represent and transmit their rights, and how girls live their day-to-day lives in a way that is respectful, dignified and happy.
Photographs must reflect boys and girls from the 13 countries where Plan International is present in the region coexisting with their daily reality, and must evocate the values and principles related to their fundamental freedoms and their empowerment #PowerfulGirls. The 13 countries are the following: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Dominican Republic.
As in previous years, the regional contest is composed of three categories: Professional, Open/Amateur, and Boys and Girls.
Corina Villacorta, Regional Director for Plan International in Latin America and the Caribeean, highlights that “in the world, girls face double discrimination because of their gender and age, leaving them in the inferior part of the social scale, one of the main causes of child poverty. However, empowering girls and investing in them and in young women has a benefit in the relief of poverty for everybody, not just for the girls themselves, but for their families, communities, and entire countries. Everyone benefits, amongst them boys and men.”
“For the Agencia EFE it is a tremendous satisfaction being able to support initiatives in favour of the most vulnerable populations, in this case the children, through Plan International’s photo contest,” affirmed EFE director for America, Alfredo Aycart.
EFE is the most important news agency in Spanish in the world, with over 5,000 items of information daily, diverse supports, and a network of correspondents that cover more than 120 countries.
BECAUSE I AM A GIRL
The contest is part of the global movement “Because I Am a Girl,” lead by Plan International, whose vision is a just world which values girls and promotes their rights.
“Because I Am a Girls seeks to transform power relationships, for girls all over the world to be able to learn, lead, decide and thrive,” Villacorta points out.
Registrations for the contest close Friday, August 25 at 5 p.m. Panama time, and the images can be either delivered to the offices of Plan International in the 13 countries that are participating (see attachment), or can be sent via email to email@example.com. All information can be found at www.porsernina2016.org
The jury for the contest will consist of national and international colleagues related to the world of photography and the rights of children.
