Together for child protection

The “Prevention, Protection and Restoration of Rights of Child Survivors of Sexual Violence” project, promoted by Plan International Honduras with German cooperation and supported by the Departmental Directorate of Education and the district offices, community Interagency Subcommittee Criminal justice and municipalities responds to the need of protection for children in Santa Barbara.

A training on protective measures for children was held for children, mothers, fathers, judges, police, defense and health personnel. In addition, forums and town meetings for discussion on violence against children  with members of the community and municipality were conducted. Fourteen advocates for children's right to be protected were selected in a participatory vote, backed by a committee of organisations and guarantors of the municipality.

Lasting Impact

Among the most significant successes of the project is the use of the Gessel chamber - now legalised following a request submission made to Congress. This is used by girls and boys who have been abused to provide their statements as evidence against their attackers, reducing re-victimization.

The project has promoted the active participation of children in implementing self-protection measures in their homes, public spaces and schools. In this way, children are able to develop their own skills for minimising the risks of abuse. It has also contributed to breaking the culture of silence about the abuses that violate children’s rights.
