New skills and positive futures for female prisoners

Female prisoners are learning new skills so they can create a better future through training from Plan International Ghana and partners.

Plan International is working alongside partners to provide female prisoners with new skill so they can get good jobs, earn a reliable income and follow their ambitions.

The project, part of our Women’s Voice and Leadership project, was implemented alongside Global Affairs Canada, Micro Aid Foundation. It has provided skills training to 18 female prisoners in the Western Region.

New skills for a better future

Each of the women has now graduated after finishing 6 months of intensive skills and entrepreneurial training. The training included hat-making, interior and floral decorations, beauty treatments and soap making. They also received training on business development, coaching, mentorship, counselling, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

Funds for new businesses

Women completing their jail sentences in the coming months will be provided with funds to help them start their businesses when they are released. Those with longer sentences will pass on their skills to future inmates to provide them with better opportunities once they are free.

The Assistant Director of Prisons who is also the officer in charge of the female prisons, said the training has contributed to the reformation of the women. “We want to give a meaning to all prisoners’ lives,” she said.
