Cultural beliefs are one of the main reasons why Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) takes place. Preserving chastity, cleanliness, family honour and preparing girls for marriage are all reasons why this harmful practice happens.

Plan International is working to eliminate all forms of violence against girls and women, including ending harmful practices such as female genital mutilation.
