Johanna Caminati Engström

Policy and Advocacy Advisor


Johanna joined the Plan International EU Office Policy and Advocacy Officer in January 2021 and is currently holding the role of Policy and Advocacy Advisor. Together with the Head of Influencing, she works on setting out and implementing the EU Office’s advocacy strategy. Johanna is responsible for monitoring EU policy updates, liaising on campaigning and advocacy activities, as well as supporting the organisation of and representing Plan International at events in Brussels. Her interests revolve around development cooperation, EU affairs and human rights – particularly at the intersection of women’s and girl’s rights and climate justice.

Johanna holds a Master’s Degree in International Development and Management from Lund University in Sweden and has a B.A. in Human Rights with additional insights from Middle Eastern, African and gender studies. Among her previous work experience, Johanna pursued an internship at the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul, working with Turkish-Swedish development cooperation, in particular human rights promotion and civil society support. She has also worked as a programme support intern with the Ghanaian NGO COLANDEF in Accra, focusing on customary land rights and natural resource management. She conducted her MSc thesis research in the northern part of the country. Johanna is since many years active within civil society in various networks and associations. Among the most recent ones are the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) and the Swedish Development Forum.
