Plan International EU Office Head of Office | EU Representative
Serap is the Head of the EU Office and EU Representative of Plan International. She has been leading the EU office since April 2018.
Currently, she is serving on the Board of CIVICUS, where she steers the work of CIVICUS, together with renowned global civil society activists, to strengthen citizen action and civil society throughout the world. She is also part of the Action Group of FAIR SHARE of Women Leaders, where she works to establish feminist leadership as the new paradigm for the social impact sector.
Previously, she held the position of Programme Director at the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) leading their Fundraising & Programme Strategy. Serap started as Fundraising and Policy Coordinator at EWL, where she successfully led the 50/50 Campaign “No modern Democracy without Gender Equality” across Europe. This campaign aimed at achieving equal representation of women and men in decision-making and power positions within the EU institutions. Whilst at the EWL, she co-founded the EU Civil Society network (CSOs FPN), an alliance of 30 international and European-wide organisations to collaborate on programme and fundraising issues. She was also a facilitation group member of the participatory funding platform of FundAction.
Prior to her role at the EWL, she led the Campaign Unit at the European Network against Racism (ENAR) where she played a critical role in establishing the first European Foundation against Racism. She also spent several years as the Head of Domestic and Sexualised Violence Department and Head of Activists and City Groups of the largest women’s rights organisation in Germany, TERRE DES FEMMES. She later led the establishment and coordination of the organisation’s representation in Berlin.
A published author and scholar, Serap has written a book analysing the effects of domestic violence and also led the first-ever study in Germany on implementation of favourable workplace policies for those experiencing domestic violence. She also published several articles in books, periodicals and magazines on international women’s rights, feminism, migration, and racism.
Serap holds a Magistra Artium Degree in Political Science, English literature and Cultural Studies from the Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany), and an M.A. in European Studies from the John Moores University in Liverpool (UK).
Serap is an intersectional feminist, and is convinced that girls’ and women’s rights can only become reality when young women’s power, activism, and leadership are at the core of our endeavours for a just and equal world. Serap loves to tweet about these topics on @SeeRap.
