Melanie, 16, from Manabi province in Ecuador, is a Plan International emergency response volunteer who has been working to help children recover from the devastating earthquake that hit the country on 16 April 2016.

Together with her sister, Melanie has formed a group of young volunteers to help reach out to children affected by the disaster, which killed more than 500 people and injured over 4,000. The group have been trained by Plan International and are supporting child protection and food distribution activities.

"We have to help the younger ones lose the fear. We want to help them overcome this disaster. After the rain, the sun always shines, and this is what we are here for – to help them get over their fears," says Melanie.
