The occupation of northern Mali changed the lives of all those who lived under its militant rule, but children were the most vulnerable.
In Timbuktu, Plan International Mali is working to ensure that children do not fall through the cracks left by war.
All over Timbuktu, Plan International has created child friendly spaces where children can safely play, perform theatre and dance within a supervised space to help them to help them move on from the trauma of armed conflict.
To help children reclaim their right to education and a normal life, Plan International's Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH) programme is working to improve the facilities in 31 schools in and around Timbuktu.
From these infrastructure projects to locations of child friendly spaces to early learning programmes, schools are the epicentre of Plan International Mali's emergency response strategy in the north.
