16 years ago a leader was born in Buenos Aires, Cauca, in Colombia. Her name is Yadis and under her sweet smile there is an empowered young woman, sure of herself that despite her young age already knows what her purpose in life is.
Her goal is to be Minister of Education in order to change the living conditions of her community and she knows that to get there, she will have to go a long way and that education will be the means to achieve this goal.
Since the age of 9, she is part of Fundación PLAN in Colombia where she has participated in different projects like “Protejamos mi Mundo”. For the past years she has been linked to the peace building process, that have allowed Yadis to reinforce her innate leadership capacity and which has led her to do things that few young people of her age manage to achieve, such as participating in the consultation for the formulation of the National Public Policy for Children and Adolescents or in the formulation of the Development Plan Territorial of its municipality.
She has also been a speaker in the Women, Territory and Mining forum and is part of the Participation Table for girls and boys. But her biggest achievement so far is to have been a Mayor for a day in Madrid, the Spanish capital, proving that nothing is impossible with dedication, work and a helping hand that drives all those skills.
"The experience of being Mayor for a day was very nice, that they allowed a woman, teenager and afro descendant to be Mayor for a day was very significant for me. I was able to get acquainted with the old city hall, make a presence in different meetings like with the Japanese Ambassador and with some architects to review some constructions in the city, I felt very happy", said Yadis.
For her, to have participated in the projects of PLAN has helped her to be clearer in the way to reach its goals, for that reason, she is already knows studying Law and Political Sciences to become in a Minister of Education. "Since I came to PLAN my life changed, because I started to have a different view of things. During my trip to Spain I could confirm that now, more than ever, I want to be a minister and I am motivated to work for children and defend all their rights", she said.
Yadis is aware of the contribution to her community and recognizes that she has become an example for many people. Thanks to her commitment to the rights, many children have sought to ask how they can do to defend their own. "I can assure you that the work that PLAN does, have changed the lives of many people, as it changed me", concluded Yadis.
