Programme highlights
Community health
Plan Vietnam works to ensure safe motherhood through building capacity for health workers, providing training in areas such as Avian Influenza prevention techniques and running competitions to increase knowledge of ‘safe motherhood'. A pilot of village health clubs has also been set up.
Early childhood care and development
Health, nutrition and early development programmes address the needs and rights of young children. Projects include nutritional cooking demonstrations, health checks and deworming for young children and toy-making training for teachers and parents. Competitions on “positive parenting” are raising awareness of preschool education issues
Quality basic education
Plan Vietnam, in conjunction with the Department of Education and Training (DoET), supports the attainment of child-friendly goals through the establishment of school library networks. We are also working to reduce drop-out rates.
In primary and lower secondary schools, we are supporting pupil health checks and raising awareness of school hygiene. In addition, the 'Lesson for life' HIV and AIDS campaign was held in all secondary schools on the 1 December, World AIDS Day. Teachers were instructed on professional teaching and child rights by teaching colleges and the DoET. Activities have also been undertaken to upgrade and construct new schools and provide equipment and furniture.
Sustainable livelihoods
Village agriculture extension clubs have been developed so farmers can share knowledge and experiences. Agriculture demonstration plots have been erected focusing on high value crops, animal husbandry and increasing crop yields.
Microfinance projects that support poorer women are progressing well; 1,230 members have taken out 1,550 loans based on 641,000,000 credits and 90,000,000 saving. In addition, Plan Vietnam is upgrading irrigation canals to ensure water supply for crops remains strong throughout the dry season.
Child protection
The programme works to ensure children live in a safe and caring environment - free from neglect, abuse (including sexual abuse) and exploitation. The Committee for Population Family and Children supports training activities aimed at preventing and dealing with child injury, especially drowning. In collaboration with the DoET, the 'Safe Traffic' campaign was launched to raise awareness of safe traffic practices.
