Making Timor-Leste a safer place for children

40% of children in Timor-Leste suffer from violence, and most crimes against children are neither addressed nor reported. But Plan is helping the country develop a national child protection system to change this.
Children’s code
Our work has played a key role in drafting a Children’s Code, which will be the basis for a national strategy on child protection. We work with children, communities and the government to help them put in place the policies, structures and skills they need.
We have delivered hundreds of child protection workshops and support the local government to roll out its own training to others.
“This training was very useful,” says João Ribeiro of Katilosa, one of the groups trained. “We work with children with disabilities, so it’s important for us to learn how to create a child protection policy for them.”
Top trainer
Plan is regarded as the top child protection trainer in Timor-Leste, and we help oversee the new system. Our involvement in this process is ongoing and we have been approached by many other organisations to provide further training.
