Plan Timor-Leste

Plan has been working in Timor-Leste since 2001, helping poor children to access their rights to education, health, livelihoods and protection.

We implement projects in Lautem and Aileu districts, and did extensive work in camps for internally displaced people in the capital, Dili, after the political crisis of 2006.

When the emergency situation stabilised and the camps were gradually phased out, we helped reintegrate displaced people into their communities.

As Timor-Leste moved from a relief to a recovery phase, we recognised the importance of establishing and strengthening systems to reduce the likelihood and impact of future disasters by developing an Emergency Response/Disaster Risk Reduction Country Programme. The goal of this programme is to mitigate the impact of conflict and of future disasters by providing targeted support to the most vulnerable children and families.

Tackling youth unemployment in general is high on Plan's agenda, but the issue is most pressing for young women in the half-island nation.
