Plantation sector

Plan Sri Lanka has been operating in the plantation sector since 2001 and works in mid-country tea estates managed by government institutions. The daily wage of a plantation worker is US $3.52 and the average monthly income is US $70.42. Around 30% of people live below the poverty line.

Programme highlights

Raising awareness of child protection

Plan Sri Lanka implements a number of awareness-raising programmes in child protection, such as mobile camps and information sessions, in collaboration with the Children’s and Women’s Desk of the Sri Lanka Police and the National Child Protection Authority.

Plan has also worked with provincial authorities to assist vulnerable communities in areas where births are not properly registered.

Adolescent sexual and reproductive health

In the Hantana Tea Estate in the Central Province, a project aimed at analysing health issues faced by youth has provided training for 80 young people in teenage reproductive health issues and mental health. It addressed an urgent need for accurate and helpful information for youth. A street drama was performed with the participation of about 50 young people. Now they are prepared to visit other plantations to convey health messages through drama.

One participant said at first he was very shy to learn the message of this subject. “The second day we understood its importance and relevance to our lifestyle,” he said.

Nutrition-based home garden programme

A home garden strategy has been developed to help local people produce food that meets their family’s nutritional needs. The programme is environmentally-friendly and based on indigenous knowledge.

School water and sanitation

School water and sanitation projects have been improved with an integrated approach, including water supply, environmental sanitation, hygiene education and promotion. These programmes are now carried out through School Development Societies with teacher, student and parent participation.

In Pupurassa Kanista Vidyalaya, a project has recently been completed that provides direct benefits to 15 families and 246 students. It encompasses safe drinking water supply, sanitary latrines, waste management, hygiene promotion, school gardening and awareness-raising.
