Northern Samar is a province located in the Eastern Visayas region. Its capital is Catarman and it is located in the northern part of the island of Samar. Plan has worked here since 2005.

Programme highlights

Food security

Plan is implementing a sustainable agriculture project funded by AusAID. The project aims to reduce child malnutrition by enabling 400 poor farming families to achieve food security. Plan organised, trained and provided technical assistance to 5 farmer groups.

Children and community participation

In Northern Samar, 49 children’s associations have had significant participation in Family Day celebrations, children’s rights and environmental campaigns, resource mobilisation, and community meetings. Children have also volunteered to help in sponsorship work in the villages.

Personal safety lessons

Plan has conducted baseline surveys to determine the extent of children in need of special protection. We used the data gathered in situation analysis as we developed personal safety lessons -  a module on prevention and detection of sexual abuse.

The Department of Education has recognised the importance of this module and issued a memo to schools directing its inclusion  in teacher-training courses.
