Strategy

Plan Nepal’s Country Strategic Plan promotes social inclusion and community participation to ensure that all children realise their rights.

We also strengthen the delivery of essential services and advocate on behalf of poor children and their families. We work in partnership with government and non-government agencies at all levels.

Issues affecting children

Nepal is home to a staggering number of children living in poverty. Of its 8,500,000 children, 40% belong to extremely poor families, 47% are malnourished, and 60-90% are anaemic, depending on their age. Of those aged 5 to 14, about 2,600,000 work as child labourers.

Early pregnancy, compounded by inadequate health services, contributes to high maternal mortality rates. Inadequate access to safe drinking water combined with improper sanitation and poor hygiene also puts children at risk.

Children's access to early childhood care and development and primary education is limited; dropout and grade repetition rates are high.

Key goals

To address these issues, Plan Nepal has the following goals:

  • Children and women realise their right to grow up healthy.
  • Children realise their right to live in a healthy environment with adequate, reliable and safe drinking water and sanitation services.
  • Children, especially marginalised girls, realise their right to education in good-quality learning environments.
  • Children and families have sufficient household economic security to enable them to meet their basic needs and to cope with emergencies, including natural disasters.
  • Children, especially the excluded and those at risk, realise their right to participate in decisions that affect their lives and to be protected.
  • A common agenda to alleviate child poverty by practising child-centred development is shared by sponsors, children and other development actors.

Progress

Plan has helped communities to realise their rights and to recognise their ability to bring about positive change.

Some of our most successful work includes:
  • achieving 100% birth registration in 16 Plan-supported communities
  • supporting community-led total sanitation projects
  • achieving 80% coverage of immunisation in Plan programme areas
  • helping to ensure that there have been no major outbreak of measles or diarrhoea in the communities where Plan works
  • increasing the number of births in Plan programme areas attended by health personnel or using clean home kits to 70%
  • serving over 100,000 households by rural microfinance projects operated by Plan and its partner organisations.
