What we do
Plan’s work in Indonesia covers 5 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:
- child health
- education and early childhood care and development
- economic security
- child protection and participation
- disaster response and risk reduction
Child health
Plan ensures that children have access to good quality health services through revitalisation of community health posts and an effective school health programme. For adolescents, reproductive health, HIV and AIDS are the key focus.
Education and early childhood care and development
Plan sees that parents and caregivers are vital in early childhood growth and development, however, adult knowledge of rearing and educating practices for children under 5 needs enhancing. We are providing locally-made educational toys to early childhood care centres at village level and strengthening and upscaling our home and centre-based early childhood care and development programmes.
We also run primary school improvement programmes and promote Learn Without Fear, Plan’s global campaign to end violence against children in schools.
Economic security
We work to improve the economic capacity of households so that they can become more resilient to shocks – such as the loss of a job or death of a family member – and plan for the future.
In eastern Indonesia, Plan focuses on food security and nutrition, while in Java we focus on improving income generation, sustained economic growth and small business development.
Child protection and participation
Child protection is central to everything we do. Plan works with some of the most marginalised and vulnerable children in Indonesia, including children in conflict with the law, street children and sexually exploited children.
We also promote Plan’s Universal Birth Registration campaign. A birth certificate provides children with easier access to health and education services, as well as protection from child trafficking and child labour.
Children have a right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. We work with children and their communities to identify problems and implement solutions.
Disaster response and risk reduction
Plan Indonesia is continuing its disaster response and rehabilitation programmes in the 2006 tsunami-affected area of Aceh and in the earthquake-affected area of Yogyakarta.
We also have a child-focused disaster risk reduction programme, which involves children, communities, non-governmental organisation partners and local governments in helping communities to prepare for disasters.
