Strategy
Plan's country strategic plan is dedicated to supporting the poor and marginalised children of Honduras.
We already work in the most neglected departments of Honduras – Lempira, Intibucá, Copán, Santa Bárbara, La Paz and Choluteca - and will be honing our work to focus on the areas of greatest poverty.
Our strategies are aligned with the 4 principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and include:
Non-discrimination
- implementing initiatives that identify patterns of discrimination and actively combat them
- lobbying the state on behalf of discriminated children
Making rights effective
- influencing the formulation of public policies
- strengthening the state’s accountability mechanisms
- strengthening partnership relations to help hold the state accountable
Life, survival and development
- designing and implementing programmes to help realise a child’s right to health, education and protection from all forms of violence, economic and labour exploitation and natural disasters
Participation and citizenship
- strengthening practices for the participation of children in all of our programmes
- lobbying for the creation of state mechanism and public policy to ensure meaningful participation of children.
Food security strategy
The rising cost of food and fuel has contributed to an increase in child malnutrition rates in a number of the departments where Plan works in Honduras.
We are working to support the capacity of the health system to help those affected, whilst building relationships with the government institutions responsible for responding to the food crisis.
We are also formulating a strategy that brings together elements of our health, education, child protection and participation and citizenship programmes to help poor families and increase their resilience to future economic shocks.
