This research study covers Plan Bolivia’s 10 years of experience in prevention and control of Chagas disease. Nearly 1,500,000 Bolivians, especially in rural areas, are currently infected with Chagas, accounting for nearly 15% of deaths among people aged 15 to 75 years in these areas.

To address this situation, Plan Bolivia and partner organisation Pro-Habitat implemented the Chagas prevention and control project in the departments of Sucre and Tarija from 1995 to 2005.

The second Chagas control project (2000 to 2005) was funded by the Government of Bolivia, DFID, the European Union, Community Fund (UK National Lottery Charity Board) and the Government of the Netherlands.

The project has:

  • Reduced household infestation of the Triatomine bug by promoting behavioural change among household members and improving and fumigating homes.
  • Provided treatment to Chagas-positive children aged 5 to 12 years in communities with lower infestation rates.
