What we do

Child using waterpump

Plan’s work in Togo, which is centered on the rights of the child, focuses on 5 key areas:

  • economic security
  • healthy start in life
  • education
  • child protection
  • assistance in emergencies

Economic security

Economic security is a key foundation of children’s rights. We focus on the most vulnerable families, enhancing their income from agricultural activities, providing access to financial services and supporting them to diversify their sources of income. We are also making village savings and loan associations available to more communities.

A healthy start in life

We work to improve access to quality healthcare, safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation. We support families to claim essential services and remove financial barriers by expanding community-led mutual health funds.
Plan also encourages communities to be involved through school health and water management committees, youth and mother’s clubs, community health and sanitation volunteers and health management boards.

Education

All children have a right to quality education without discrimination through gender, social status or place of residence. We support formal and informal education activities and help build the capacity of education authorities, teachers and parent-teacher associations.

We focus on improving the school environment, assuring gender equality, improving school governance, diversifying education and promoting schools free from violence.

Child protection

Plan works to protect all children from harm. We promote child and youth leadership to build their resilience to fight against abuse and exploitation and educate communities about child protection.  This includes promoting birth registration, preventing gender-based violence, protecting vulnerable children, and acting against child exploitation and abuse - including child trafficking.

Assistance in emergencies

We strengthen community resilience and promote the rights of children and their families in disaster situations.

We help children identify and reduce the risks of environmental disasters and support communities to create contingency plans, early warning mechanisms and adapt to climate change. We also act as an advocate for child rights in national forums and work with the government on disaster risk management.
