Since 2000 Plan has been working in the Shikan locality of North Kordofan state, located 630 km from Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.
The area is semi desert, characterised by low rain fall and sandy soil with low crop productivity and successive droughts.
People depend on agriculture and livestock breeding as the main source of income. Plan implements projects in partnership with the local government, national and international non-governmental organisations.
Programme highlights
Children’s and mothers’ health
To improve the health status of families, especially children and mothers, various community-based services are carried out on child survival; reproductive health; nutrition promotion; HIV and AIDS prevention, and awareness raising on harmful practices such as female genital mutilation.
Plan builds the capacity of community health workers and committees to enhance child survival and safe motherhood.
Early childhood care and development
To help ensure all children have equal opportunity for quality learning, Plan builds the capacity of pre-school teachers and volunteers to support early child care and development.
In partnership with the ministry of education, we also support the preparation of teaching aids for child-friendly teaching methods.
Quality learning for life
Through our school improvement programme Plan focuses on enhancing the roles of children, teachers and parents in promoting child-friendly environments that ensure quality learning. Plan has activated child and youth groups to increase their participation in decision making.
Household economic security
To improve agricultural production and increase family income Plan supports farmers to learn the latest techniques for improving crop production.
We have also improved access to credit through village savings and loans schemes, a community-led micro-finance initiative.
Safe drinking water for children
Plan has carried out feasability studies to find the availability of surface and underground water. Water stations have then been upgraded and communities are trained on the proper management of water systems.
Child protection and participation
Plan continuously raises awareness on child rights, protection and participation through various campaigns so children have a strong voice in issues and decisions affecting their lives.
