Kassala is located in the eastern part of Sudan. This area has many refugees from bordering countries, estimated at 5% of the state population; while the displaced population is about 3.8%.
The state is prone to seasonal floods which affects infrastructure, public property and agricultural production.
Plan has been working in Kassala since 1989 in partnership with communities, governmental departments, UN agencies, and international and national non-governmental organisations.
Programme highlights
Children’s and mothers’ health
Plan focuses on improving children’s and mothers’ health through the community-based integrated management of childhood illnesses; reproductive health and the control of epidemics.
We work to enhance community access to health services through the rehabilitation and upgrading of health units and the training of health workers and volunteers on primary health care aspects.
Safe drinking water for children
Plan supports communities to rehabilitate and upgrade drinking water systems; build their capacities to manage their water facilities; and improve environment sanitation by changing people’s behaviour through hygiene education.
Learning for life
Plan is working with partners to improve children’s school enrolment, retention and achievement - especially for girls - through adopting a school improvement plan.
We promote child-friendly learning environments through capacity building of children, parents and teachers and advocate particularly on child rights, child protection and child participation in decisions that affect their lives.
Household economic security
Plan works to improve agriculture production and household income through farmer and pastoralist training, agricultural extension sessions, provision of improved seeds and veterinary campaigns.
Women and youth are also supported by vocational and business skills training.
