Country Director, Don McPhee

Don McPhee, Plan Sudan's Country Director.

Don McPhee has been working in development since the early 1980s, mostly in Africa. As his university studies in Canada focused on cultural geography and sociology, a career overseas in development has allowed Don to continue to pursue his interest in people and cultures.

He joined Plan in 1985, starting in Sudan where he was already living and working. It was Plan’s focus on children and sustainable community development that attracted him to the organisation.

Following Sudan, Don served as Director in Haiti, and then Burkina Faso. In 1995 he became Plan’s first Director in China and then in 2001 became the Regional Programme Support Manager for West Africa, leading programme development and technical support for the 12 countries in the region.

While in China, Don was a member of the Plan team in Asia that led the development of Child Centred Community Development that subsequently became Plan’s programme approach.

In West Africa, he was a member of the team that developed ‘Children in Africa – A Strategic Framework’ which guides Plan’s work in Africa.

Don is particularly proud of Plan’s work related to children and media in Africa and on child protection.
