Strategy
Plan is helping to improve the quality of education in Sierra Leone
Plan’s strategy in Sierra Leone is aimed at ensuring that all children realise their rights to survival, development, protection and participation.
In Sierra Leone, 45% of school-age children have no access to education. The drop out rate is 25%, and is especially high among girls. The infant mortality rate is 310 per 1,000 live births. Only 35% of the population has access to safe drinking water. Major health problems include malaria and diarrhoea.
Key goals
To address these issues, Plan Sierra Leone strives to:
Education- support schools and committees to improve the availability and quality of education
- adopt school designs that promote active learning
- promote advocacy for increased access to education.
- advocate for increased access to health services
- collaborate and foster partnerships to promote advocacy on malaria, HIV and AIDS, birth registration and other vital health issues.
- promote youth economic and skills-based empowerment
- increase participation and decision making through formation of youth groups.
- build capacity for greater participation in decision making.
- help children to be aware of their rights and responsibilities.
- help young people to be at the forefront of disaster risk reduction.
Progress
Plan has made steady progress towards its goals through project activities for schools: creating child-friendly learning environments, capacity building of teachers and the provision of teaching and learning materials.
Plan has also improved health and hygiene in schools and communities by increasing access to immunisation and basic health services. Access to village small loans and savings schemes has also increased, allowing more people to raise funds and invest their money for the future.
