Plan is working to improve education for all children

Plan’s work in Niger covers 4 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

• child survival
  
• quality education for all children
• protection for all children
  
• disaster risk reduction

Child survival

This programme aims to boost child survival rates by improving communities’ access to quality health services, safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

We work to build capacity at all levels, enabling institutions, health personnel and communities to better manage illness, access quality health services and  safe drinking water, and ensure sustainability of activities.

Quality education for all children

Niger has one of the lowest school enrolment rates in the world due to the poor education system. Plan Niger works to increase the ability of communities and children to participate in their own education, through support for community and student groups. We help authorities through support to infrastructure, equipment, supplies, training, policy improvement and resource mobilisation.

Protection for all children

This programme works to end all forms of child abuse. Plan is working with the government and other key partner organisations to harmonise and promote legal texts on child protection, such as the UN’s child rights convention.

At the community level, we train vigilance committees to prevent abuse, and we support all partners’ birth registration activities to give children official identities and thus easier access to protection and health and education services.

Children are involved in all aspects of the programme, particularly in spreading key messages, raising awareness and preventing cases of abuse.

Disaster risk reduction and response

People in Niger are vulnerable to emergencies, such as drought and flooding. This programme aims to reduce household vulnerability and strengthen communities’ capacities to better prevent and manage risks and emergency situations, in partnership with key authorities.

Our disaster risk reduction work includes microfinance activities, food security stocks, awareness-raising and training in early warning and emergency management.
