Plan started working in Inhambane Province in the southeastern part of Mozambique in 2007. Inhambane is home to 1,267,035 people. Plan’s programme unit covers Jangamo district situated south of Maxixe City and close to Inhambane Bay. Since the unit was set up, the number of sponsored children has grown to 5,500.

Programme highlights

In Jangamo district Plan’s work covers 4 core programme areas:

  • maternal and child health
  • primary education and early childhood education
  • child protection
  • social and economic capacities.

Maternal and child health

We help to improve access to primary health care through the mobilisation of community health committees, training of community health volunteers, and linkages with government health posts and centres.

Primary education and early childhood education

A total of 850 children in the villages of Madonga and Marrumwan are benefiting from 2 new schools built with support from Plan. Three new schools will be completed in Chichululo, Magaiça and Guipombo villages, benefiting about 1,000 children. We train teachers and school councils, and promote a safe learning environment. Plan Mozambique also helps communities to provide early childhood care and development to 400 children in 3 communities.

Child protection

Plan’s Learn Without Fear campaign to end violence in schools was launched in Inhambane Province in February 2009. A provincial child protection network and a Child Help Line helps to prevent and respond to child abuse cases.

Thanks to our birth registration campaigns 37,000 children from Jangamo and Maxixe districts now have official identities, giving them access to vital health and education services. A child protection and care project started in July 2009 has benefited 5,000 orphans and vulnerable children – providing them with access to preschools and ensuring their enrolment in formal education.

Plan Mozambique is also reducing vulnerability to disasters among children, youth and communities through capacity building, training, and integrating risk reduction into the school curriculum.

Social and economic capacities

This programme helps communities to work together to improve the economic well-being, food security and nutrition of their children. Community groups and organisations such as farmers associations, women’s saving and loan groups, and youth clubs are being promoted and strengthened.
