Plan has been working in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, since 1994. The community members are mainly of Chewa ethnicity and depend on agriculture for their livelihood and economic activities.
Programme highlights
Maternal and child health
Plan is promoting safe motherhood, adolescents’ health and child survival by supporting health facilities with the logistics to implement outreach clinics, ensuring the availability of reproductive health services, and providing equipment and capacity building. Read a case study on our maternal and child health work.
We also provide safe water supplies to increase access, promote sanitation and hygiene in schools and communities. Emergency support is also provided to sick children.
HIV and AIDS
Plan is working with community-based organisations to support life skills training for youths and promote HIV counselling, testing, education and communication on HIV prevention.
We also provide vocational skills training and emotional therapy to orphans and vulnerable children.
Food security and sustainable livelihood
Plan promotes small scale irrigation for winter cropping, livestock keeping and a seed pass on scheme to increase household food security. We also run a microfinance programme promoting village and savings loans for 144 groups to boost household income levels.
Quality education support
Plan is supporting the ministry of education to improve access to quality education and learning opportunities by promoting early childhood care and development, constructing pre-school shelters, school blocks, teachers’ houses, and providing supplementary food to the under 5s.
We are also setting up school linking projects with schools in the UK.
Child rights, gender and community empowerment
Plan is supporting children to grow up and develop in safe environments where their rights to protection and participation are fulfilled.
We are strengthening child protection structures, engaging youth in governance and policy decisions and promoting our Learn Without Fear campaign against violence in schools to ensure that abuse, discrimination and exclusion are reported and acted on.
