Children, Ghana

Child-friendly school environments are helping children to succeed

Plan’s work in Ghana covers 4 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:
  • quality education
  • better health
  • food security
  • creating awareness of child rights

Quality education

This programme focuses on encouraging community participation in children’s learning. We also help to provide child-friendly environments and infrastructure for effective teaching and learning to take place.

In addition, we also provide scholarships to needy children, enabling them to fulfill their full academic potential when money is a barrier.

Better health

Plan Ghana focuses on encouraging childhood survival activities such as ensuring that all children aged under 5 are vaccinated against major life-threatening diseases and that their parents are shown how to reduce the risk of malaria to their infants.

Food security

This programme provides farmers in rural communities with high yielding seed varieties and facilitates year-round access to water to ensure good, regular harvests.

Creating awareness of child rights

Plan Ghana promotes children’s rights and issues affecting children through media programmes, children’s clubs and government lobbying.

One area of focus is our Universal Birth Registration campaign, which seeks to ensure that all children are given official identities so that they can access their rights to social services, such as health care and education, and gain protection from child labour and trafficking.
