Investing in the future by investing in children

Christiana working in her office

May 2011: Christiana sits behind a desk at the Upper Manya Krobo Rural Bank at Asesewa where she works as a national service person in eastern Ghana. She works with customers daily and ensures the bank is making good investments in the loans it selects. She understands the importance of investment both from her education and her personal background. Christiana was a sponsored child who benefited from Plan’s scholarship and support in her potential.

With scholarship comes opportunity

Christiana grew up in Asesewa, her family’s financial status could only be described as poor. She was a clever child who enjoyed and excelled at school. Her attendance was always in jeopardy, however, never knowing from one term to the next if her parents would have enough money for the school fees and tuition.

The uncertainty of Christiana’s situation did not dampen her drive or ambition. She was even willing to risk her personal safety to stay on her educational path. “Without my mother’s knowledge I was making plans to travel to Accra and work for anybody so I could save money for school,” revealed Christiana.

Thankfully, Plan Ghana helped Christiana secure an interview for a scholarship to senior high school. She was awarded a scholarship from Plan to attend the private Pentecost Secondary School in Koforidua. With the continued support of Plan, her family and her dedication to her studies, Christian was awarded a scholarship to university where she completed her degree in management studies.

In addition to her job at the bank, Christiana is a member of Rural Ambitions Ghana, a partner of Plan Ghana formed to work on Rights of the Child issues and to promote the Girls Football Project.

“My dreams become a reality through the enormous assistance from Plan Ghana. Now I am in a position to give back and help others,” said Christiana.

Since 1992, Plan has worked in Ghana assisting 28,379 children in 300 communities across the country.
