Districts: Al Aba’adia, Om Dinar, Al Waha and Al Barnogy

Plan Egypt has been working in Beheira and Damanhur town since 2000. Beheira is a rural area where most inhabitants depend on agriculture.

We have been working with children, families, other non-governmental organisations (NGOs), educational and  health institutions to raise awareness around child rights, and to empower marginalised districts within these communities.

Programme highlights

Disability and social inclusion

Since 2007, we have been implementing community-based rehabilitation in Beheira through partnerships with local and other international NGOs. We offer all children equal opportunities through forming community structures that support workshops and awareness sessions for children and their families.

Village Saving and Loans Associations

Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) were launched in Beheira in 2008 to help rural women access credit at lower rates so that they can invest in their own businesses and meet the needs of their families as part of sustainable livelihoods initiative.

Volunteers were trained on how to form VSLA groups and Plan has been training partners in other governorates to widen the saving concept and financial independence of women.  We currently support 98 VSLA groups in Beheira.

Gender and harmful traditional practices

Plan Egypt works with communities to promote gender equality and stop harmful traditional practices, such as female genital mutilation.

Four communities have been raising awareness of girls and women participation and empowerment in communities through workshops, conferences and capacity building.

Plan Egypt has assisted 2,000 women and girls in the area to obtain national identity cards, which provide  access to key services such as health and education.

Education and community learning

We have partnered with the community, other NGOs and the General Authority of Literacy and Adult Education (GALAE) to provide education opportunities for children who are out of school and for illiterate people.

Plan Egypt has also been promoting a violence-free learning environment through the Learn Without Fear campaign, which has resulted in fewer children dropping out of school.

Esma3oona – Hear us out!

Since 2007, we have been implementing a highly successful child media project where children produce TV soaps to raise awareness of child rights. The Esma3oona programmes are aired on Egyptian national television every week and have reached hundreds of thousands of people.
