What we do
Plan’s work in Egypt covers 7 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:
- child and youth participation
- community learning
- supporting people with disabilities
- empowering girls and women and stopping violence against them
- protection and promotion of the rights of street children
- protection of working children
- village savings and loans groups.
Child and youth participation
We support the active and meaningful participation of children and youths in the development of their communities by facilitating the creation of different community structures such as child and youth clubs, children’s parliament, and youth groups, where children and youth are given the opportunity to voice issues that concern them, propose solutions and work with communities to bring about change.
Community learning
Plan Egypt is supporting girls’ community schools, literacy classes, life skills classes, civic education initiatives and environmental education. We target school drop-outs, street children and illiterate people.
Supporting people with disabilities
Disability is prevalent in our programme areas. In the past children with disabilities were considered as a shame and their rights were totally overlooked. Plan is implementing a programme that supports people with disabilities so that they become better able to access services and opportunities, and hence become active participants in the development of their communities.
This is achieved through many activities such as raising families’ awareness on disability issues and training them on early detection and on how to deal with people with disabilities. We also provide training programmes for people with disabilities to enhance their life skills and build the capacities of service providers.
Empowerment of girls and women
Many girls and women in Egypt are subjected to violence due to cultural practices and traditions such as early marriage and female genital cutting. We focus on raising communities’ awareness on gender equality and against all forms of violence towards girls and women. We promote the empowerment of girls and women and train them in small business skills such as hand crafts and sewing.
Street children
Children in Egypt are forced on to the streets by several factors, including family break ups, large families, child abuse, poverty, unplanned migration to cities and the difficulty of coping with formal school systems.
Plan Egypt works to reduce the number of street children in our target areas, as well as to improve the quality of life and future prospects of this marginalised group.
Funded by the Swedish International Development Association (SIDA), this programme is currently being implemented with 5 local partners in Alexandria and Cairo, focusing mainly on street girls.
Protection of working children
Child labour is prevalent in Egypt due to the poor living conditions experienced by many people. Plan Egypt is implementing a project to move working children from hazardous working environments to safer ones and to provide them with educational, health and legal facilities as well as nutritional care.
Village savings and loan groups
We assist communities to establish village savings and loans groups, which lend money to community members at a reasonable interest rate. This gives members an opportunity to invest in their livelihoods and increase their income. Community members borrow money to pay for fees, health services and to finance small businesses.
