Ending violence against children in schools is the goal of Plan’s new global campaign, Learn Without Fear.

Our research reveals that cruel and humiliating forms of psychological and physical punishment, gender-based violence and bullying remain a daily reality for millions of children in Africa and around the world.
Children have the right to go to school in safety and experience quality learning without threats of violence.

In Africa, our campaign targets 3 of the most common and damaging forms of violence in schools: corporal punishment, bullying and sexual abuse.

Universal Birth Registration

We have been working on birth registration initiatives in Africa since 1998, helping millions of children to gain an official identity.

An unregistered child is invisible in many respects. Without proof of age or identity, African children are not granted their civil rights or access to essential social services, such education and health care. Currently, 55.1% of all births in Africa are not registered, and in Sub-Saharan Africa this figure is estimated to be 66%.
We work with governments and communities to ensure that all children are registered at birth.

Our campaign places emphasis on improved legislation along with its enforcement; assisting governments to make birth registration a top priority; creating demand for birth registration among parents through community sensitisation and mobilisation, and targeting the most vulnerable children.

Plan’s approach is rights-based, and includes research into existing civil registration systems, awareness raising, capacity building, and birth registration activities.
