Please support this vital work by donating to our emergency appeal today.
We will be providing regular updates on the floods situation and the distribution of aid over the coming weeks.

- With the increasing incidence of diseases including malaria, Plan has provided medicines to district health authorities in Sanmatenga and Namentenga, and continues setting up wash facilities in shelters and giving out hygiene instruction.
- We are helping children who are waitng for psychosocial support with games and activities such as singing and dancing.
- Plan will soon start food distribution in the Southwest Programme Unit, the area most recently affected by the storms.
- Yet more mud-houses in the area are threatened with collapse at a time when shelters are already full and themselves susceptible to damage in the storms.
27/08/2010
- Plan is continuting its vital work to provide shelter to the victims in light of more devastating storms - almost 62,000 people have now been affected in the North-Centre region alone, with a further 1,600 people having lost their homes in Plan's Southwest programme unit.
- Our team in Burkina Faso is working with youth organisations and child psychologists to provide counseling to children and their caretakers in shelters.
- With almost 400 hectares of crops destoryed in the North-Centre region alone and cases of malnutrition reported, one of Plan's focuses is distributing the food to those who have been displaced.
- When people collect their food, they are given hygiene instruction - this way we can reach the greatest number of people.
- The biggest challenge for aid agencies is providing enough temporary shelters; high winds and torrential rains threaten to bring them down.
18/08/2010
- OCHA now estimates that 105,000 people have been affected by the floods across the country; 16 people have been confirmed dead and several are missing. Plan's Namentenga and Sanmatenga Programme Units are at the heart of the worst affected area, accounting for half of the total affected population.
- Continuning heavy rains and high winds hamper rescue and recovery operations; some of the tents and shelters provided by Plan have been washed away by the torrential rain, and demand for aid far outstrips supply - many communities still remain inaccessible.
- Plan, national authorities and partner NGOs continue with relief efforts, including cereals, mosquito nets, sleeping mats, clothing and replacement shelters for medical care and hygiene education.
- So far we've managed to reach 35,000 people.
05/08/2010
- According to OCHA, at least 87,000 have been affected by the floods across the country, and a further 15 have lost their lives.
- Plan along with the UN and Burkinabe government have been setting up mobile latrines, wash facilities and temporay shelters for the homeless. Plan gives out hygiene instruction to help those affected combat the increased risk of spread of disease.
- Army helicopters are also delivering vital emergency supplies.
01/08/2010
- After continued rainfall and more severe flooding, Plan in Burkina Faso initiates an emergency response to help people who have been made homeless by the devastation.
- Plan works with the Burkinabe government and partner NGOs distribute urgent food and medical supplies.
25/07/2010
- Heavy rain hits Burkina Faso, causing flooding in northern and eastern parts of the country, including Plan's Namentenga and Sanmatenga Programme Units
- Dams burst and provisional figures suggest up to 20,000 people will be affected by the floods
