Achievements in numbers
Since the earthquake Plan has raised US$43,500,000 and secured US$13,000,000 in gifts-in-kind to help Haitians rebuild their lives.
Our accomplishments over the last 2 years include:
Education
- Helping over 31,000 children return to school by providing school kits, rebuilding classrooms, training teachers and supplying equipment for schools.
- Plan was one of the first international non-governmental organisations to have plans for semi-permanent schools approved by the Ministry of Education. Thanks to these efforts, 257 classrooms have been constructed in Jacmel and Croix-des-Bouquets. These schools are earthquake and hurricane resistant and designed to last up to 15 years.
Health
- Securing a US$13,000,000 donation of essential drugs that enabled us to support the treatment of over 88,000 patients – as well as acquire over 13,000 bottles of Pedialyte (therapeutic hydration solution) that have been used in cholera prevention.
- Vaccinating over 124,000 children for measles, diphtheria and tetanus.
- Providing access to psychosocial support to over 14,000 people (12,000 being children).
Child protection
- Approximately 5,000 children participated in activities inside the 30 safe and supportive child-friendly spaces Plan constructed after the earthquake.
Water, sanitation and hygiene

- Distributing hygiene-promotion kits and promoting public health awareness messages to some 16,000 people.
- Building latrines and showers in several of the camps for the displaced. Installing water tanks to provide safe water in the camps.
Cholera response
- Reaching over 400,000 people through cholera prevention and awareness campaigns, hygiene kit distributions, water and sanitation assessments and improvements, and health interventions.
- Creating a cholera response task force comprising national and international specialists.
- Supporting the setup of oral rehydration points, cholera treatment units and a cholera treatment centre.
Livelihood
- Providing work for over 36,000 people. The income has helped families meet their basic needs while the work rehabilitates and rebuilds community assets.
- Cash-for-work programmes have also been started at oral rehydration points and camps for cleanliness and disinfection.
Tracing sponsored children
- Before January 2010, Plan had 42,000 children in its sponsorship programme. To date 97% of those children have been followed up on and work is ongoing to locate the remaining 3%.
Shelter and provision kits
- Providing over 22,000 people with tents and basic living provisions in the direct aftermath of the earthquake. Plan, together with partner Irish non-governmental organisation Haven, provided 100 small wooden houses to mothers with young children who had lost their husbands during the earthquake.
