Plan Indonesia received $14.6 million in tsunami funding, which helped survivors rebuild their communities, and education and health care infrastructure. In addition to constructing homes, libraries and schools, we made great strides in health care with new clinics and programmes that taught children the importance of personal hygiene and a nutritious diet. We also decided that in order for our work to have wider and longer-lasting impact, we had to focus on early childhood care and development.

  • water supply systems constructed for 9 villages, benefiting 6,808 people

  • 16 toilets constructed

Housing and community development

  • 161 houses constructed
  • 67 kitchens constructed

Psychosocial support and child protection

  • 21,186 children and parents received counselling, and 156 village counsellors trained
  • 39 libraries constructed
  • 29 children’s clubs established
  • 11,124 birth certificates issued to replace legal documents lost in the tsunami, enabling them to claim health care, education and their full rights as legal citizens
  • school supplies distributed to 1,500 students
  • 1 toll-free helpline for children established

Education and early childhood care and development

  • constructed 17 schools
  • school improvement programs for 8 junior high schools
  • 240 children trained in “Little Doctors” program for better health and hygiene
  • 2,500 children enrolled in early childhood care and development program
  • 7 centres for children’s activities and recreational learning
  • renovated water and sanitation facilities in 5 schools
  • supplementary feeding program for 2,500 children
  • furniture and equipment distributed to 13 schools
  • health and hygiene program established in 9 elementary schools

Health

  • 4,250 women received antenatal and postnatal care
  • constructed 39 community health centres and 25 maternal health centres
  • training for 47 midwives
  • immunizations for 1,500 children
  • training for 390 community health centre workers
  • distribution of hygiene kits to 4,100 people in camps
  • 2 temporary clinics in camps for displaced people with 24-hour medical care

Livelihood
