On December 26, 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Indonesia triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami that wiped out coastal communities and claimed more than 229,000 lives in 14 countries. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.

Plan's work in four tsunami-affected countries was funded by donations from individual donors, governments, private companies, groups and foundations in more than 15 countries around the world. Donors entrusted Plan with a total of US $49.1 million to help tsunami survivors recover and to rebuild their communities. Plan cannot acknowledge every donor here, but we do appreciate every donation.

Plan worked in the four countries hardest hit by the tsunami. We worked with children and their communities, and undertook relief and recovery projects best suited to their needs. Plan also worked with over 130 partners in the four countries, including community-based and non-governmental organisations, as well as United Nations and government agencies.
