September 2009: Plan Brazil and Sao Paulo football players and directors have come together to support Plan’s work by endorsing the Learn Without Fear campaign. The players and club will support the campaign by attending events throughout the football season to highlight the issues.
Hundreds protest death of sexually abused girl
Following the death of a young school girl resulting from sexual abuse by her teacher, children from schools in Sierra Leone organised a demonstration in protest. Over 300 children from 19 schools joined in the march to advocate for the end of abuse in schools. The young girl was made pregnant by her music teacher who arranged an illegal abortion from which she subsequently died.
The mass protest has spurred child protection agencies, the police, MODCAR children’s forum, Concern Women and the Cluny Sisters of St. Joseph’s Convent to call on duty bearers to step up action against perpetrators of child rights violations.
Plan exceeds research expectations
The first anniversary of the campaign is nearing and the campaign is exceeding many targets already. In the global Call to Action, Plan promised that 30 countries would participate in contributing to school violence research. So far, 35 Plan offices have contributed in some way to analysing the situation of school violence in the countries in which they operate. This is an impressive target to have hit in the very first year of the campaign. This research ensures that Plan’s campaign, advocacy and programme work is always evidenced-based.
