Spotlight on Latin America: making real change

Plan is helping to make schools free from violence in Latin America

May 2009: Nicaragua’s latest decree is a massive step towards completely ending corporal punishment in schools. This is great news for the 49% of students who have either witnessed or experienced corporal punishment.

Plan was instrumental in ensuring the Ministry of Education issued the national resolution. However, there are reservations being expressed about how the rule will be implemented locally and the gradual way teachers will be encouraged to not use such punishment for discipline. Plan will be keeping up its support of the government to make sure the resolution is implemented.

Raising awareness

Other news from Latin America: As violence in schools is often hidden or ignored, Plan in Latin America is working extensively with the media to raise public awareness of the issues. This is vital to ending suffering of millions of children in schools.
