Girls campaigner sets sail in Vendee Globe race
12 November 2012: Plan ambassador Samantha Davies has set sail solo in the Vendee Globe around-the-world boat race to raise awareness of Plan's Because I am a Girl campaign.
Samantha, from the UK, is one of 20 participants and the only female skipper to be taking part in the non-stop event.
Endurance challenge
The race kicked off on 10 November from Les Sables d’Olonne in France. It will now be months before Samantha steps back on land again – as she navigates down the Atlantic Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope, then clockwise around Antarctica before heading back to France.
Samantha faces many challenges on the way but has great experience of the sea to help her through. She came fourth in the last Vendee Globe race in 2008-2009.
Samantha has been supporting Plan and working to defend girls’ rights for the last 2 years.
Follow Samantha, watch her video reports and post a message of support on the Vendee Globe website*.
